Overview

During the past six years, the Autism Research Program at the Fay J. Lindner Center for Autism and Developmental Disabilities has gained international recognition as a model within the autism research community, joining with the Seaver Autism Center for Research and Treatment at Mt. Sinai to form the Greater New York Autism Research Center of Excellence. Researchers at the Fay J. Lindner Center have also collaborated with many other established research institutions including but not limited to the following: National Institutes of Health (NIH), Autism Clinical Trials Network of Autism Speaks, Zucker-Hillside Hospital, Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, local universities such as Stony Brook University and Hofstra University, as well as international universities such as the University of New Brunswick.

 

In April 2009, the Autism Research Program at the Lindner Center expanded across two integrated settings located on AHRC Nassau’s Brookville Campus and the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research of the North Shore – Long Island Jewish Health System. The Fay J. Lindner Center in Brookville is home to the behavioral and clinical assessment research program (equipped with state-of-the-art audiovisual recording and analyzing equipment) and the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research (FIMR) is home to the psychopharmacological, brain imaging, genetics, and immunological studies.

 

The broad range of expression that characterizes autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) creates special challenges for clinicians and families. New knowledge regarding the potential contributing factors, presentations, progression, and outcomes of ASDs is necessary for the development of effective intervention programs. In the service of this goal, the Autism Research Program at the Fay J. Lindner Center takes an interdisciplinary approach, integrating the efforts of several key professional disciplines into the program, including psychiatry, psychology, social work and speech and language pathology. We strive to advance the field of autism research and develop effective educational and treatment programs that address these challenges.
